at the end of luke 19, Jesus makes an indictment against the temple in jerusalem with this passage from Jeremiah:

"'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, 'We are safe' - safe to do all these detestable things? Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching!' declares the LORD." (jeremiah 7:9-11 NIV)

our assignment was to mimic jeremiah and make a rebuke of the contemporary american church. here's what i came up with:

"'Will you purchase goods made at the hands of child slaves, perpetuate sexual immorality with pornography and divorce, turn a blind eye to the genocide in sudan and the natural disaster in southeast asia, stand for an unrighteous war and innocent deaths, worship at the temple of wealth, comfort, and security, and then come and stand before me in this church, which bears the name of Jesus, and say 'We are Christians' - people who do as they please because God's grace is cheap and salvation is assured? Has this church, which bears the cross of Christ, become the home of a people who no longer hear or live the Word of God? But I know your hearts!' declares the Lord."
